F Is For 'Fail'

F21 Pleated Double Bow Sheath Dress, Sz S
Pleated Double Bow Sheath Dress

My recent Forever 21 order was an total failure. Granted I expect this from time to time because Forever 21 is hit or miss but trying on the items I purchased was especially laughable today.

The dress above measures 18" across the widest part of the bust (measurements taken with the garment laid flat). This makes for a a really strange top portion of the dress that is both long and wide. I can't see this dress fitting most people without alterations (shortening and slimming) in the bodice and I certainly don't love it enough to do that.

The lace dress (stock image below) didn't fit me any better and measured 19" wide so there's plenty of material left over. See it on me here. The lace pattern is really pretty and I love the scalloped sleeves so I might keep it and get it slimmed. It's a big 'maybe' though since I've yet to tailor any of my F21 pieces. To do so would cost the same or more than the item itself.

Embroidered Lace Dress
In my opinion, I would put both dress on the Do Not Order list for petites or as possible DIY projects for those with patience and sewing skills. I'm still looking back at the stock images in disbelief. Both items have to be pinned back because those models are thin and these items are swimming on me in sz S.

I also ordered these polka dot tights in sz SM/MED. It's a bit loose on me so it bunches a little when I bend my knees. Note that the polka dots end about mid-thigh.

  1. Lol! The first pic with caption had me in stitches. Bummer about both dresses and the tights. You don't like them better than the Frenchi ones fried Nordie's right? I went to buy a back up paid and our size is sold out :(

  3. Thanks Annie! :)

The Frenchi ones fit much better. I went up a size on those based on the reviews. I hope they restock! They're a staple.

hahaha your caption is hilarious Jess! :) But sucks that it was too big and the tights bunched up on the knees. :( I agree though - F21 can be a hit and miss which sometimes I hate because I don't try on clothes when I go shopping most of the time (I grab and go). It looks cute on the hanger but then when it's on the body.. it's a total different story. haha..

Oh no. That's sad... The lace dress' fitting is miserable... I love that orange dress. Would have been awesome if the fit was good!

  10. The polka dots end on the tights!? That's so... silly. I've been searching for a pair of polka dot tights and was thinking of getting these, but now I'll just pass. That's too bad about the dresses. The first one is really cute with the bows, but weird fits are annoying. I buy a lot of F21, but have never done it online, I always have to try it on and sometimes the fit is rather bizarre. It's really ironic about F21, how they don't have more items that fit petites since their average customer is probably 13 years old. :)

  11. Good point (we are young at heart).

Yup. If you're not planning to wear a very short skirt then those tights should still work out for you. The Frenchi dot tights by Nordstrom are my favorite and they're similar and cuter I think. I'm still on my first pair of them despite some reviews about how delicate they are.

I need to do what you do and try on items in store. At least I got into the habit of only buying after I returned for store credit. I hope they change their return policy one day.

  12. Thanks for the tip on the nordstrom tights!

I don't think F21 will change their policy any time soon. Since their target audience is of the younger crowd, I think they are afraid of abuse (buy, wear, and then return). I've actually witnessed a few times of girls trying to return 15+ items at once. Who needs to return that many clothes at one time!?

  13. You're welcome. Unfortunately I just checked on them and they're sold out online because they went on sale.

Oh my. I've never seen that many items returned myself. There are times when my entire order doesn't work out but I don't usually place big orders with them so I only return a few things at a time.
